Botanical Gelplate Printing and Collage

Gelplate printing is fun and experimental, perfect for exploring colour and pattern.

Using a 10cm x 10cm gelplate and acrylic paints, create a range of botanical themed images investigating colour, pattern, texture, layering and image transfer.

By using a variety of foliage and flowers, investigate the effects of layering and ghost prints.

The aim will be to create a grid style collage of your prints ready to be mounted up and framed at a later date.

Tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your course fee.

You may wish to bring along some flowers and foliage from your garden or surrounding areas.

This course is suitable for beginners and improvers.

A light lunch will be provided.

Off Loom Weaving – Stones, Pebbles and Wood

Learn to weave without a loom by wrapping thread around a pebble, stone or piece of wood and weaving patterns through it with a bodkin needle. 

You can choose your own colourways, using monochrome, earthy or brightly coloured yarns, from a selection provided by your tutor.

The tutor will also provide stones, pebbles and wood for you to weave on. 

You can bring your own stone or pebble, but please ensure the surface is fairly flat.

These woven or wrapped pebbles and stones make fabulous contemporary ornaments.

The weavings on wood look striking when mounted into a simple frame. These frames can be provided, if you wish, at a cost of £7, payable to your tutor on the day.

This workshop is perfect for beginners and for those who wish to refresh their weaving skills.

Tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your fee.

Still Life Drawing – Flowers and Textiles

A still life created in the centre of the room from a mixture of different fabrics, ceramics and fresh interesting flowers.

Focus on quick warm up sketches and different ways to accessibly get into drawing. Experiment with continuous line, mark making, pattern and shape.

Learn  how to use view finders to crop small sections of the still life, helping to focus on a defined area and to compose your artwork effectively.

You will then extend into longer length and larger drawings for a more focused time, utilising the skills you have learnt in the morning and giving you more choice in your decision making.

This workshop is aimed at showing students a more free and accessible way of sketching. It is not a technical drawing class.

Tutor will provide most of the materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your fee.

Have A Go Enamelling

Enamelling is the art of fusing glass to metal.

Learn how to use different enamelling techniques to create a variety of pieces that can be made into simple jewellery, mounted pictures, key fobs or even fridge magnets. You will complete several items on the day.

Tutor will provide all materials and equipment for you to use during this workshop.

There is a cost for materials included in the course fee for you to complete two pieces of enamelling. If you wish to make more pieces, your tutor will advise you of the extra cost and this will be payable to your tutor on the day.

This workshop is primarily for beginners but anyone who has enamelled previously is also welcome.

A picnic lunch will be provided.

A ‘Snail’ Sketchbook

Make simple 'snail' folded pamphlet sketchbooks ( no sewing required) and use each page to explore unusual compositions in Westhope's walled garden.

You will make a view-finder to help find interesting view points and decide what is important in a composition.

Begin with thumbnail sketches of different views, for example a path, a natural window, ground level, an intersection, then work on a larger 'snail' concentrating on detail and tonal contrast.

Learn how different viewpoints affect the atmosphere of a drawing, as do strong contrasts of light and shade.

You might stick with a medium that you are used to or try something new.

Basic materials will be provided but do bring any medium you like working with. If you are confident using colour, then do bring along your favourite watercolours.

Tutor will supply all basic materials. This cost is included in your course fee.

Dynamic Drawing in the Landscape: Dry Materials

Taking inspiration from the gardens and landscape around Westhope College, this new workshop encourages you explore different ways to observe and record.

Working on large scale long and tall paper, you will work freely with earthy colours and monochrome to explore exciting compositions and movement.

Learn expressive, textured drawing techniques with charcoal, chalks and earth pigments.

If you have any chunky drawing materials that you enjoy working with then please feel free to bring these along.

Tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your course fee.

Screen Printing On Textiles

Learn how to make simple, vibrant designs for a piece of calico or a tote bag. You will then make cut paper stencils to print through.

Translucent colours make interesting overlaps and fine lines can be achieved as well as bold shapes.

You will print on paper at first to gain confidence with your screen, squeegee and print pastes.

Learn how to mix colours, handle screen-printing equipment and enjoy how the simplest shapes can create wonderful designs.

Your tutor will provide images for inspiration but do bring any ideas, designs and photos to inform your work.

Most materials are provided by the tutor. This cost is included in your course fee.

If you wish to print on a tote bag, these are extra and will cost £5 per bag, payable to tutor on the day.

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and improvers.

Silk Satin Scarf – Watermarking Techniques

One of the beautiful effects offered by silk painting is the creation of watermarks – darker outlines to areas of colour. 

This workshop will allow you to build layers of colour and marks on a luxurious pure silk satin. The dense weave and glossy surface of the fabric will show off the design with glorious results on your own lovely unique long scarf.

You will learn the basics of silk painting, experiment with colour mixes and applications and how to fix your colours to the fabric. All students will leave with one, beautifully coloured silk satin scarf measuring approximately 160 cm x 45 cm.

Tutor will provide all materials to enable you to make one scarf . This cost is included in your course fee.

Fused Glass Flowerscape

This fun and inspirational half day workshop allows you to design and create your own fused glass flower picture.

You will learn the basics of glass fusing including how to safely cut and shape glass.

You will be able to make two different pictures: one picture will be mounted in a wooden stand, the other can be glued into your own frame or have holes drilled after fusing to be hung in a window. Completed examples will be available for your inspiration. Do bring ideas with you and pictures of any inspiration you might have. 

Your glass will be fired and be posted back to you within 2 weeks.  An additional £6 fee will be payable on the day for postage.

Tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your fee.

Fused Glass Jewellery

This exciting half day workshop allows you to design and create your own unique pieces of fused glass jewellery. You will be able to create up to three pendants/brooches and one pair of earrings.

The workshop will include tuition on cutting glass, designing and assembling your jewellery. Completed examples will be available for your inspiration, but please feel free to bring along your own ideas if you wish.

Your pieces will be taken and fired in the tutor's kiln. Once fired, jewellery findings will be attached and they will be posted back to you within 2 weeks.

The tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. There is a cost included in your course fee to enable you to make up to three pendants/brooches and one pair of earrings.

If you wish to use dichroic glass pieces, there will be a small extra charge which is payable to your tutor on the day.

An additional £5 fee for postage will be payable on the day of your workshop.
