Two Day Cloisonné Enamelling

Cloisonné enamelling is essentially drawing with wires and filling each cell with ground enamel suspended in water. During the two-day workshop you will learn how to make and complete a
silver and copper Cloisonné enamelled piece of jewellery e.g. pendant, brooch or earrings to take home.

Day One:
You will learn how to use both transparent and opaque enamel on silver and copper using wet-lay techniques. The tutor will also show you how to grind and clean the enamel powder in readiness for wet-laying onto your piece. You will look at different designs (the tutor will bring along books, tracing paper, coloured crayons) and how to shape the silver wire to your design. You will start by making sample strips on metal both with and without flux in various colours, to help you decide and gauge colours for your finished pieces.

•       Introduction and tool.
•       Learning firing techniques.
•       Preparing enamels for wet-laying by grinding powders and suspending in water.
•       Dry sift powder enamel.
•       Wet-lay enamels.
•       Add layers of enamel and kiln fire, it could take four or five firings to build up the colours on  your piece.
•       Add silver foil to enamelled copper samples.
•       Add silver wire to both silver and copper samples.
•       Design your own colourful pattern for your design.
•       Stone down and polish the enamel.

Day Two:
You will build on your learning from Day One to complete the finished piece of jewellery

•       Using a copper / silver blank you will prepare your blank in readiness for our design.
•       Dome your blanks using either a sandbag or doming block and hammer.
•       Prepare your blank for adding enamel.
•       On the copper blank you will add silver foil base.
•       Using your chosen design, you will add silver wires using pliers and tweezers to shape the wires, and fire in the kiln.
•       Once your design is fired, you will start wet-laying enamel colours you have prepared, firing after each layer.
•       Once the enamels are level with your wires you will sand down and re-fire.
•       To complete you will polish your completed piece and add findings.
