Mixed Media Land and Seascapes
Discover the joy of playful experimentation in this hands-on workshop. You’ll create your own landscape-inspired mixed media image using intuitive painting techniques such as inks and bleach, watercolours, and wax resist.
Once your painting begins to take shape, you’ll explore free machine embroidery — using stitch as a mark-making tool to enhance and transform your artwork.
There will be plenty of options for those who wish to take the theme further: experimenting with carbon paper for drawing, or incorporating stencils, for example. Mixed media is wonderfully creative — there are no rules, just curiosity and a willingness to have a go.
No prior experience is necessary. Delny, an experienced teacher, will guide you through the process and respond to individual ideas and needs.
A light lunch, refreshments and most materials are included, however please bring along your own sewing machine if you can. We have a couple of machines to borrow if needed, but please let us know in advance.

Creative Paste Papers
These beautiful and unusual decorative papers, popular from the 17th century, are used for book-binding, covering boxes and collage. Making them is fast, fun and free, whether you are an experienced artist or new to the arts.
Wheat paste is mixed with pigments and swiftly brushed onto wet paper; then the creativity begins: wooden scrapers, tools, found objects, grouters, combs and fingers can all be deployed to make a riot of swirls and graphic patterns, or neat geometric or floral designs.
When your papers have dried we will use them to make a simple single or double concertina note/sketchbook. No sewing involved, just folding and glueing. Your papers can be used for both covering and endpapers or you can make a booklet show-casing your different patterns.
This workshop is suitable for all experience levels.
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.

Machine Embroidered Textile Landscapes
Spend a day combining loose, playful painting techniques with appliqué and free-motion embroidery, to create an expressive textile landscape.
This workshop is designed as an opportunity to ‘translate’ a favourite view or landscape, in a loose and experimental way. Creating a piece of textile work that can be simply hung as a wall-hanging, made into a cushion cover, or even a light-shade.
The day starts by laying down the base colours of your landscape on thick cotton canvas. No painting experience is needed for this stage, as you will be given plenty of opportunity to try out techniques and colour combinations. Having an image or photograph as a starting point is useful, as it will give you a colour palette to work with.
Once dry, these canvas pieces are torn into strips, which are then re-positioned and pinned down onto a second piece of canvas, before moving to machine-embroidery to add further detail and texture.
The final stage is to embellish these landscapes with beads and hand-embroidered stitching.
This workshop is suitable for anyone with basic knowledge of using the free-motion embroidery technique on their sewing machine.
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included, however please bring along your own sewing machine if you can.

Mark Making for Sketching
Spend a day getting to know how to use different art materials in this workshop that is all about experimentation and technique.
You will start by making a simple concertina book that you will then use to record your mark making so that afterwards you will have a reference book for future use when drawing and sketching.
Using a wide variety of media such as pencil, charcoal, graphite sticks, pastels, water soluble crayons, oil pastels etc. we will use these media in simple step by step exercises. These exercises will help you learn more about your materials and the kind of marks that you are able to make with them.
This workshop is experimental in nature so that you can have fun learning basic techniques that you can use in your own artwork in the future, using your concertina book as a reminder of what is possible.
This workshop is suitable for anyone looking to learn more about how to get the best from their art materials, from beginners to experienced artists.
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.
