Making Earth Pigments
Learn how to grind, sieve and muller raw ochre pigment to make
watercolour paints and etching inks for printmaking in this one-day
workshop.
Ochre is a naturally occurring pigment found in earth rich in ferric
oxide. The Forest of Dean is one of these places and artist / printmaker
Nichola Goff has been collecting and using these pigments in her work.
Earth pigments produce beautifully rich tones ranging through yellow,
orange, red, purple and umber, they are relatively simple to process and
often used for paints and dyes.
In this workshop you will learn about processing earth pigments from a
raw material into a fine powdered pigment that can then be used for inks
and paints. Participants will learn the techniques and recipes to
produce water colour paints and etching ink, and learn monoprint
techniques to experiment with the earth pigments as printing inks.
Participants will take home a small set of earth colour watercolour
paints, a tube of unique earth pigment etching ink made on the day and a
set of hand-made monoprints.
Suitable for all skill levels from beginners to experience printmakers.
All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the
workshop fee.
