Basics of Chinese Brush Painting -
The Fish, the Flycatcher and the Blossoms

Repeated by popular demand!

Celebrate Chinese New Year with us in this new approach to the introductory course on Chinese Brush Painting.

Chinese brush painting is about opening the mind to a completely new way of creating imagery. Unlike in western art, simple birds, flowers, leaves and insects are created by the stroke of a brush.

Working with Chinese ink and a brush, you will be introduced to the basic strokes used to create simple images. You will then practise your painting techniques using these to create images of a variety of subjects. These often include leaves, branches, insects, teapots, lotus flowers, and simple characters. This particular workshop will focus on the fish, the flycatcher and the blossoms.

At the end of the session you will be shown how to display your finished work on a fan or miniature screen.

This workshop is open to everyone, from complete beginners to those wishing to improve their skills.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the course fee.

Grow Your Own Salads All Year Round

Using a mixture of indoor presentations and outdoor demonstrations you will learn how to grow salad crops throughout the whole year, including the depths of winter, using greenhouse, tunnel or homemade cover.

Throughout the day we will:
• Look at how to give winter salads a bit of protection: using homemade frames, bought cloches, repurposed bottles, or, if you’re very lucky - a greenhouse/polytunnel.
• Explore a huge range of salads, leaves and some plant species that you may never have come across: the best varieties for summer growing and the varieties that will tolerate the cold and keep producing all winter.
• Think about the planning calendar: It’s all in the planning when it comes to getting salads every day! You will make your own planning calendar to grow throughout the year according to your conditions.

You will take home lots of information and ideas, a few of the best seeds to start with, some sown seeds to grow on at home ready for planting out and plans for a cloche or frame for winter protection.

Printmaking with Drypoint Card

Roll up and discover the exciting possibilities of this versatile print medium. The coated drypoint card can be incised, cut, torn, crumpled and punched with tools to make an extensive variety of marks. Unlike lino, it can easily be cut into a variety of shapes and works equally well with intaglio printing (the ink sits in your incised marks) as relief printing (the ink sits on the surface leaving your marks white).

Working in monochrome you can build an image with background, scattered shapes or atmospheric plate-tone (ink on the surface can be left in areas or smudged away).

A workshop for both beginners and experienced artists, the tutor will encourage individual projects; you might experiment with diverse techniques or work on illustrative, decorative or abstract imagery to create unique prints. There will be lots of visual inspiration to help your creativity flow.

Collagraph - Printing from Collage and Chine Collé

Collagraph loosely means a print made from a collage. Experiment with a variety of materials to glue onto a printing plate, usually a piece of card or board which you seal before using it to print. Different materials can be used including paper, paper tape, wood, plastic tape and fabric. Layers of adhesives can also be used such as PVA glue, varnish, and gesso to create mark making. These collagraph plates are then inked up and printed onto paper using a small etching press.

We will then add colour to our plates and prints using Chine Collé. Chine Collé is a technique whereby we add glue to thin papers such as tissue paper or Japanese paper and this is sandwiched between the printing paper and the printed image. This added layer of colour becomes integral to the print.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who want to improve their skills, or just have a play with printmaking.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee, although please do bring along any materials you would like to collage with.

Chinese Brush Painting - Bees and Peony

Chinese brush painting is about opening the mind to a completely new way of creating imagery. Unlike in western art, simple birds, flowers, leaves and insects are created by the stroke of a brush.

During this workshop we will look at the beautiful peony with a cluster of flying bees. The peony is a symbol of male and female beauty. It is also regarded as the Queen of Flowers. Sitting in the landscape the sense of space is achieved by delicate mountains and distant tea houses. Less is more and the empty spaces we will leave alone to open our minds for meditation and mindfulness.

Rag Rugs - Vintage Techniques for Recycling Fabrics

Learn the traditional techniques of progging and hooking strips of fabrics through hessian backing. A seat-mat is a small first project to learn progging, using your own cotton fabrics on the hessian we will supply.

Your tutor will also demonstrate hooking with a hand hook and speed hook. Hooking is used for pictorial detail using strips of woollen fabrics and yarn. These two techniques together will mean that you are fully equipped to make rugs and other items long after you have taken your first seat mat home.

Inspiration, tools and hessian, as well as a light lunch and refreshments, are provided, but please bring along your own fabrics to make the seat mat to suit your own taste. In the spirit of reusing and recycling, we strongly encourage you to choose pre-loved fabric where you can!

Batik Seedpods and Natural Forms

The beautiful shapes of seedpods and various plant forms will be used as inspiration to create batiks on fabric in this one day workshop.

Working with hot wax as a resist we will paint and layer fabric using dye-based inks to create imaginative interpretations of the theme. Two different techniques will be explored, one using the exciting effects that some more unconventional tools can make (think potato mashers and
whisks!), the other a more considered drawn design. Jenny will have lots of ideas and inspiration to help you create your batik artworks.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and improvers.

All batik materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Make a Merchant & Mills 'Camber Set' Dress

Spend a day making a lovely simple Merchant & Mills shift dress in lightweight denim.

The 'Camber Set' is a short sleeved shift dress that can be worn alone as a summer dress, or over a blouse or jumper for the colder months. The pattern can also be used to make a simple top rather than a dress.

You will learn how to cut out the 'Camber Set' paper pattern and sew it together. This will involve different seam finishings, sewing darts, sewing with bias binding, putting in a sleeve, and creating hems. There are no zips or buttons in this pattern, it pulls over your head.

This workshop is a great opportunity to have a go at dressmaking if you've never done it before, or for more experienced makers to create a lovely garment for themselves or as a gift for someone else. You will take away your own dress and a copy of the pattern that you can use
again.

All fabric, threads, and a pattern in your chosen size to keep as well as a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee. You will need to bring your own sewing machine, scissors and measuring tape with you.
