Upholstery

Join experienced upholsterer Mark Swain from The Little Furniture Shop for a day working on your own project. Mark will be on hand with expert guidance to help you revive your chair, stool or other portable piece of furniture.

There will be tools to borrow and a variety of sundry items like webbing and tacks available to buy for cash on the day, but please bring along your own furniture, stuffing and fabric, and any tools you are already using. By the end of the day you will have moved your project forwards and learned some new upholstery tips and techniques.

You don't need any previous upholstery experience - all levels are welcome. Please note that it may take several sessions to complete more complicated projects and that we will need advance notice of the item that you are bringing. 

A light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Waxed Paper Nasturtiums

Using real flowers and leaves to make templates to create lifelike flowers from waxed paper has a long tradition, dating back to Victorian times. The craft was linked to the fascination with botany and nature and creating realistic flowers to decorate your home was a popular past time.

Using crepe paper, wires, and wax, you will create your own nasturtiums, complete with leaves. Unlike fresh flowers, these will last for years to come.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced artists.

Windows, Doors and Walls

Hammer home your techniques for painting buildings by mastering how to deal with tricky architectural details. This one-day course will give you the confidence to create attractive paintings of sun-soaked balconies, charming old-fashioned front doors and much more.

Your tutor will share her top tips on how to paint realistic doors, walls, roofs, windows and other bits of buildings, including the right brushes to use, clever tricks for creating the appearance of stone and wood textures, and colour mixes.  You can use whatever medium you most like to paint in, just bring in your acrylics, oils or watercolours, a selection of brushes and some suitable surfaces to paint on.

This workshop is suitable for artists of all skill levels, from beginners onwards

A light lunch and refreshments are included, however please bring along the paints, brushes and medium you use best.

Introduction to Sprang

Join us for a fascinating introduction to Sprang, one of the world’s oldest textile techniques.

Sprang is a remarkable method of interlinking and braiding on stretched threads, with examples dating back to the Neolithic period. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics using a simple stick frame to create beautifully elastic fabrics ideal for bags, caps, and more.

Most participants go home with a small finished bag, a collection of sample pieces, and a work-in-progress to continue at home - along with a new appreciation for the ingenuity of this timeless textile craft and its early makers.

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels, from complete beginners onwards.

Wood Block Printing

This course is designed to provide an introduction to wood engraving for beginners. There will be a brief introduction to the history of wood engraving in the UK referring to a selection of engraving books, then you will have a go at making your own.

You will learn:

  • How to prepare your wood block and transfer your drawing to the cutting surface.
  • How to use the core tools specific to wood engraving and techniques to engrave your image onto the end-grain wood block.
  • How to ink up and take a proof print by hand on Japanese papers.

We will talk about how to create tonal areas and composition using simply the black and white of the relief printing technique. There will be lots of books and images to inspire your own work, or bring along ideas for your own design.

Dyed Velvet Scarf

Create a scarf from soft black cotton velvet, lined with fine black cotton lawn. You will use a bleaching paste with blocks and/or stencils to remove some of the black dye, leaving patterns in shades of rose pink to terracotta, standing out vividly against the dark background.

You will finish the scarf with a simple lining of black cotton lawn, sewn to the main velvet body. Experiment with geometric shapes and patterns, or make your own design.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced textile artists

Introduction to Flax Day

Spend a fascinating day with flax experts Simon and Ann Cooper learning about this most useful and ancient plant. The morning will involve a presentation on the history of flax, and then in the afternoon you will have the opportunity to process and make your own flax thread. Go home inspired and informed.

Morning:

  • Introduction, presentation on flax and hemp ancient and modern with examples of fabric for everyone to see.
  • How to grow flax from seed, harvesting and retting flax straw with more hands-on examples.
  • Working flax straw on a bench to extract fibres, twisting to make a balanced thread.

After lunch:

  • Working prepared fibres ready for spinning, dressing a distaff, use of drop spindle.
  • Spinning tow with a twine twister.
  • Basic weaving on prepared warp using threads made through the day.

This workshop is suitable for anyone with an interest in flax, either growing, spinning or weaving. No previous experience is required.

Wooden Spoon Carving

Who needs to buy utensils if you can make your own? The course will cover the whole process of carving a useable spoon in wet or ‘green’ wood from harvesting the timber in a sustainable way.

Each student will learn basic spoon-carving techniques with the axe and knives, and should complete at least one finished spoon which will need to dry before use.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some carving experience.

Copperfoil Glass Play Day

This fun one-day workshop is a great chance to try out the popular (and addictive!) craft of copperfoil stained glass.

You will use small pieces of glass to create your own piece of glass art using copper foil, solder and copper wire to add details.

Make a feather, heart, bunting or another simple decorative design - there will be lots of inspiration available on the day, or bring your own simple design.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with glass experience looking to play for a day.
