Monoprint with Collage

Create a line drawing and collage using a mixture of mono printing, collage and other media.  This method, called direct trace drawing, produces a linear monotype that has a unique soft edged quality similar to the tone and line in soft ground etching.

Begin by using torn paper to make a simple collage, then rolling up printmaking ink onto a sheet of Perspex, draw on the back of the collage to transfer a mono print drawing on top of it.
Take your work further by working on top of the image with media of your choice, watercolour, inks, watercolour pastel etc.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced printmakers.

A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.

Mark Making for Sketching

Spend a day getting to know how to use different art materials in this workshop that is all about experimentation and technique.

You will start by making a simple concertina book that you will then use to record your mark making so that afterwards you will have a reference book for future use when drawing and sketching.

Using a wide variety of media such as pencil, charcoal, graphite sticks, pastels, water soluble crayons, oil pastels etc. we will use these media in simple step by step exercises. These exercises will help you learn more about your materials and the kind of marks that you are able to make with them.  This workshop is experimental in nature so that you can have fun learning basic techniques that you can use in your own artwork in the future, using your concertina book as a reminder of what is possible.

This workshop is suitable for anyone looking to learn more about how to get the best from their art materials, from beginners to experienced artists.

Collagraph with Chine Collé

Spend a day playing with collage techniques for printmaking. Experiment with a variety of materials – paper, paper tape, wood, plastic tape and fabric - to glue onto a printing plate, then sealed before print. Layers of adhesives may also be used such as PVA glue, varnish, and gesso to create mark making.

These collagraph plates will then be inked up and printed onto paper using a small etching press. We will then add colour to our plates and prints with the use of Chine Collé.  Chine Collé is a technique whereby we will glue thin papers such as tissue paper or Japanese paper and this is sandwiched between the printing paper and the printed image. This added layer of colour becomes integral to the print.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced printmakers who want to play for the day.

A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.
