Creating Space

Creating space and depth in representational paintings can be a challenge, but is very important because without this element paintings are flat, boring and lifeless. In this workshop we will explore six ways to create space and depth in your work, transforming the feeling of two
dimensions into three, and helping you to bring the illusion of reality into your next painting.

This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

Silver Jewellery in a Day

Spend a day learning simple techniques to produce your own silver jewellery.

Practice tool use and model-making in copper first, then use your new skills to turn your idea into a real silver pendant or ring to your own size and design. By the end of the day you will have created a beautiful piece of simple silver jewellery to wear yourself or give as a gift.

This course is suitable for complete beginners or improvers.

Temari Balls

Making temari balls is a Japanese craft that originated in China and came to Japan around the 7th century A.D. Traditionally, temari were given as gifts symbolizing deep friendship and loyalty and over the years they evolved from a fairly basic form into exquisite works of art.
This workshop will introduce you to the craft of the temari using basic herringbone stitch to create the traditional chrysanthemum design, or one of the more modern geometric designs.

Learn the basic techniques of making a simple temari ball which you may finish during the workshop or which will be advanced enough for you to finish at home.

This course is suitable for beginners and improvers.

A light lunch, refreshments, and materials are included in your course fee, but please bring with you any embroidery threads and yarns that you may particularly wish to use.

Make a Patchwork Star

This lovely patchwork star is the perfect introduction to traditional template patchwork, also known as EPP (English Paper Piecing). You will learn how to cover the templates and join them together accurately using hand stitching. You can decorate your star using beads or buttons, ribbons and sequins. These stars are perfect for topping your Christmas tree and they make great gifts, but stars aren't just for Christmas, everyone deserves a beautiful star any time of the year! Once you've made this project, who knows where your new quilting skills could take you - the sky's the limit!

Bring fabric to suit your own taste and either some matching embellishments, or bring some cash to take advantage of Christine's own haberdashery collection.

This course is suitable for beginners or improvers, however basic sewing skills would be helpful.

Festive Papercutting

Papercutting is the craft of the moment, seen everywhere on posters, packaging, book jackets and greetings cards. Now you can master the basics of this highly rewarding, low-cost creative craft and make your own unique Christmas cut outs.

With the help of resource sheets you will master accurate, safe cutting using a scalpel. Then you will you'll design your own festive themed papercut. This could be a flat panel or a free standing card. Time permitting you could design and cut a second version. You will pick up numerous handy tips for successfully completing your paper cuts to a high standard.

Great fun, highly rewarding and a little bit addictive!

Braid Society Try-it Day

This introductory workshop is aimed at both complete beginners and those who wish to improve their braiding skills. You will be introduced to a variety of basic braids, tassels, cords and knots as well as special braiding techniques including Ply-Split and Kumihimo. A wonderful opportunity to learn from Braid Society members, Anne Dyer, Julie Hedges and Kay Hawkins.

The Braid Society has very kindly subsidised this course.

Make a Pleated Pouch Bag

Make a stylish contemporary bag using pleating and sewing machine techniques.

With a background in Fashion Design from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, your tutor Ken has cultivated a deep passion for textile artistry and garment creation. Beyond creating original artworks showcased in exhibitions, Ken has also mentored beginners through apprenticeship
programmes. He will show you the possibilities of sewing to make interesting textures and shapes with your fabric.

Each student will go home with a bag either completed, or with the skills and understanding to complete at home.

This course is suitable for those who already have some sewing machine experience.

You will need to bring your own sewing machine, and the fabric of your choice (instructions will be sent when booking).

More Adventures in Indigo

Back by popular demand! Another chance to explore the magic of indigo dyeing, along with the sophisticated ‘tie-dyeing’ process of Japanese Shibori.

In this session you will create two traditional Shibori patterns on cotton fabric and also have a go at dyeing onto tissue paper. Your beautiful finished dyed products have endless possible uses, including as table runners, scarves, cushion covers, wrapping paper, book covers and more.

The designs explored in this workshop will be different to those created in the ‘Introduction To Shibori’ workshop, and will include some new designs for those who have already been on the 'Adventures in Indigo' course.

Suitable for beginners and improvers, no previous experience of indigo dyeing is required for this workshop.

Dynamic Drawing in the Landscape - Wet Materials

Get out into nature and release your art from constraints! Learning new techniques and working intuitively you will free up your mark-making and enjoy the rhythms in the landscape.

Working on large scale long and tall paper, you will work freely with earthy colours and monochrome to explore exciting compositions, pattern and movement.

Enjoy the fluidity of inks using big brushes and natural tools such as feathers, twigs and sponges with plenty of water.

Copper-foil Glass Lantern

Perfect for the darkest time of the year, learn the traditional techniques of cutting glass, copper foiling and soldering to create beautiful panels for this simple lantern.

Choose your own coloured glass pieces from a selection of offcuts and learn how to cut these glass shapes to fit your blank panel template. You will then be shown how to grind, foil and solder each panel to create unique sides for your lantern.

Students will be given one black-coated steel lantern to work with and can create panels for two or more sides. The lantern dimensions are: height 25cm X width 12.5cm x depth 12.5cm.

We recommend that students have some previous glass cutting experience or that you have attended one or more of Jennifer’s glass workshops.

Festive Willow Decorations

Have fun making simple festive decorations in this one-day willow-weaving workshop. Create beautiful decorations including stars, trees, mini-reindeer, bunting and other shapes to display around your home or garden, or to give as gifts.

You will learn some simple willow-weaving techniques and how to make a variety of different shapes, and then you can choose your preferred options and spend time creating a whole host of decorations to take home with you.

Your tutor will provide each student with an individual bundle of materials, enough to complete several decorations in a variety of colours, depending on what materials are available at the time of the workshop.

Berry Basket
COURSE FULL

Create a basket in a day in this workshop with one of our brilliant basketry tutors. Suitable for  beginners or those wishing to improve their skills, you will learn how to make a lovely little basket that will be perfect for berry or egg collecting. This course has been so popular with our students that we are running it again!

You will make one traditional stake and strand basket using several varieties of coloured and stripped willow. Learn the principles of stake and strand basketmaking, making bases, inserting side stakes, 3 rod whale, a trac border and inserting a handle.

Your tutor will provide each student with an individual bundle of materials, enough to complete one basket. Each student's bundle will contain a variation on colours which depend on materials available at the time of the workshop.

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels

Fused Glass Windchime

Glass is the perfect material to brighten up your garden all year round.

This workshop provides an opportunity to create your own unique fused glass windchime. Examples of several different styles will be available to choose from if you wish.

You will be taught how to prepare your design, safely cut the glass and assemble your finished creation.  Once fired, your windchime will be frost-resistant and safe to leave outside during the winter.

Your glass will be taken away by the tutor, fired and posted back to you within 2 weeks.

An additional cost of up to £10 ( depending on size and weight) will be payable on the day for postage and packaging.

All materials will be available at the workshop for you to make one windchime. Any additional items you may wish to make will incur additional costs and will be payable to the tutor on the day.

Chinese Brush Painting - Cockerels and Fish

Enjoy exploring the exquisite colours and markings of two very different creatures.

The beautiful shimmer and movement of the fish and the bold, noisy colours of the cockerels.

Leo will show you how to capture the essence of both using simple, Chinese brush painting techniques. After experimenting and practising your colour washes and brush strokes, you will display your finished work on a small, three panelled screen.

A day of joy and laughter amid a swirl of feathers and fins!

Tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your fee.
