Off Loom Weaving

Learn to weave simple structures without a loom in this gentle one day workshop. Weaving has a long tradition for making functional fabric, but today will be about the the joy of making and the simple beauty of your creations. You will thread around a pebble, stone or piece of wood and
weave patterns through it with a bodkin needle to create your own piece of heritage-inspired contemporary art to take home.

Your tutor will provide stones, pebbles and wood for you to weave on, although you are welcome to bring your own pebbles or wood if you have something you really like.

This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those looking to enjoy a day of crafting with others.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee. Some pieces look good in a wooden frames, which are available for an extra £7 cash, payable to the tutor on the day.

Painterly Screenprinting

Free up your painting techniques and discover the exciting immediacy of screen mono-printing. Using water-based pigments, you will brush colours swiftly onto the screen in an explosion of colour and marks.

Areas can be masked with paper cut-outs and ‘sgrafitto’ used for pattern and detail by drawing onto your print with a wooden tool. A variety of brushes will create different textures.

Your prints can be entirely experimental and abstract as you explore this exhilarating way of working, or you might have images you wish to use, such as figures, landscapes, seas or skies.

This course is for both beginners and more practised artists, as the tutor will take you through the processes of mixing inks, using a squeegee and utilising your ideas.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Drypoint Printing with Chine Collé

Learn to make a dry point plate using acrylic and metal plates in this one day workshop. Drypoint printing involves scratching designs into a plate to create a print with a unique, textured line. These soft, feathery lines of drypoint lend themselves to playful illustrations or
expressive sketches.

The plate is then carefully inked and printed through a small etching press. You will also learn chine collé which is a collage technique that can be used to introduce areas of colour during the printing process.

Throughout the day you will use your own designs and images to produce a print from acrylic and metal plates and will also learn about inks, materials, equipment and chine collé.

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels, from complete beginners to more experienced printmakers looking to play for the day.

Upholstery - Bring Your Own Project

Join experienced upholsterer Mark Swain from the Little Furniture Shop for a day working on your own project. Your tutor will be on hand with expert guidance to help you revive your chair, stool or other portable piece of furniture.

There will be tools to borrow and a variety of sundry items like webbing and tacks available to buy, but please bring along your own furniture, stuffing and fabric, and any tools you are already using. By the end of the day you will have moved your project forwards and learnt some new
upholstery tips and techniques.

You don't need any previous upholstery experience - all levels are welcome.

A light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Enamel Windchimes

Spend a day making a decorative windchime using a variety of enamelling
techniques.

You will learn how to enamel using a Mapp Gas torch as well as kiln firing different elements, using copper piping and blanks as a base for your designs. You will torch fire the tubes and decorate with frit, as well as enamel the round support top cover and the chime.

You will have the chance to assemble your windchime before going home, leaving with a lovely decoration for your garden, or a gift for someone.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some enamelling experience who are looking to try different techniques.

Cabochon Stone Setting

A cabochon stone has a smooth, domed top and a flat base.

Learn how to make a setting for a round or oval cabochon stone and complete a silver pendant and, if you have time, a ring in this one day silversmithing workshop. Once the basics are mastered this versatile technique can be applied to create settings for many different shapes
and materials.

This workshop is suitable for beginners, but also makes a great follow-on from the Silver Jewellery in a Day class.

Botanical Illustration
COURSE FULL

Come and learn more about recording nature by mindful illustration. Using a variety of botanical subjects, not necessarily flowers, you’ll improve your observational drawing skills, learn about watercolour and colour matching.

We’ll make compositions and illustrations using ink, watercolour and coloured pencils. You’ll learn about perpetual journals and delight in this relaxing and mindful project.

You will To measure, record and draw parts of a variety of botanical subjects, improve our understanding of composition and explore media and tips and tricks of natural history illustration to improve your botanical recording skills.

This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced artists.

Illustrative Map-Making

Create a unique illustrated map of your chosen location in this one day workshop.

We will briefly look at other cartography and the parts of a map, share ideas and then make a rough sketch of the location.  You will include historical and personal details and perhaps folklore which will help instill a sense of place, and record your ideas and feelings.

You will improve your drawing and learn about cartographic icons, and discover the Turkish map fold!

Finally you will assemble your map as a final image which you can also choose to get scanned and printed at a later date.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with drawing experience.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee. You will just need to bring along an idea of the area you want to map and any reference materials to refer to.

Logwood Dyeing

Create wonderful images on paper and fabric using eco-printing techniques combined with logwood natural dye and various foliage. The logwood dye produces a beautiful blue base colour, perfect for creating bold prints.

You will experiment and print onto handmade paper, card tags and also silk and cotton. You will be amazed at the stunning effects that a variety of leaves and seedheads can create on different base materials.

The resulting samples can be used in many creative projects such as art collages and stitch projects.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who already have some dyeing experience.

All materials, lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee, however you are encouraged to bring along any foliage and seedheads that you would like to try to take prints from.
