Boxes Like Houses
Make a small card and fabric box, inspired either by your own house, or by the sort of house one of your favourite characters would live in.
Plan something simple and you should finish your house and garden on the day.
If you choose a more elaborate design you may need to finish this at home.
Your finished box will be perfect for storing small precious items such as jewellery, or maybe special sewing samples and threads etc.
Box size and shape can vary but should be no larger than approximately 18cms x 15cms x 13cms .
Tutor will supply heavy card for your box structure along with some fabric and trimmings. This cost is included in your course fee.
Students are advised to bring along their own fabric and trimmings for the box if these are particular to the design. These fabrics must be suitable for glueing and hand stitching.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and improvers.
A picnic lunch will be provided.

Weaving Wild - Cordage Exploration
As plants reach their peak growth and strength we can utilise their natural properties to make durable and versatile string. We will experiment with a variety of plants to extract fibres for natural cordage. A forage in the Westhope grounds is also planned to harvest a few plants and weeds, maybe brambles and nettles etc. which can be used for further experimentation.
We will also experiment with a basketry technique called 'looping'- using cordage to make knotless netted baskets.
Cordage not only allows you to make beautiful string baskets and bags, it also opens up new possibilities for creating fixtures, fastenings and handles for other baskets you may make.
Tutor will provide some materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your fee.

Tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your fee.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and improvers.

Beginners Bookbinding With Creative Covers
An exciting new workshop making two different book bases and their covers.
Begin by creating the cover papers for your books. Learn how to use a variety mixed media – inks, stencils, paint, resists, water soluble pencils and crayons, stamps, prints etc. to create a variety of designs for possible book and pamphlet covers.
We will begin the session by using washes of colour, ink on paper and then adding further colour, stencils on top. This is intended for students to individualise their own book covers.
These papers, when dry will then be used to make a small pamphlet book. This is created by simple bookbinding sewing techniques.
Then we will make covers for a concertina book using students own wrapping paper, recycled prints etc. These covers will then be made into a concertina book.
Students are requested to bring their own wrapping paper, prints on paper for recycling, decorative paper that they would like to use for covers for their books. Ideally the weight of paper should be at least 100 gsm and no thicker than 175 gsm (at least A3 in size).
Also, any media you would like to use such as acrylic paints, inks, dyes for use on paper, stamp pads or stencils. Anything that you would like to experiment with.
Tutor will supply the following;
A3 paper for students to create some covers with.
Paper for the inside leaves of the books.
Needles for sewing and bookbinding thread.
Bonefolders.
Some acrylic paints and inks.
This cost is included in your fee.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and improvers.
A picnic lunch will be provided.
