Three Day Gilded Wood Conservation and Restoration Workshop

Join us for a three day deep-dive workshop learning how to conserve and repair carved, gilded wood using traditional methods.

You will investigate objects to understand the difference between oil and water gilding, how to clean gold and when gesso needs consolidation. You will make and learn how to apply size, gesso and bole, then both oil and water gilding. Finally you will master distressing, toning, glazing and watercolour so your repairs blend in.

These skills will enable you to repair old frames, furniture and other gilded wood objects as well as creating your own gilding projects. Please bring any gilded objects such as old picture frames to learn on.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some conservation experience.

Light lunches, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee, however please bring along your own gilded objects to work on.

Introduction to Nalbinding

Loop-manipulated textiles that use just a single needle can be traced as far back as the Mesolithic period and are still popular today, particularly in Scandinavia. Join us for a fascinating hands-on journey through the history and ancient roots of nalbinding, a technique that predates knitting by thousands of years, and has been used to make everything from socks, to bags, mittens and more.

Working step-by-step, you’ll learn five distinctive stitches to give you a comprehensive grounding in this remarkably versatile craft:

  • Simple looping.
  • looping around a core (Tybrind Vig stitch).
  • Coptic stitch (cross-knit looping).
  • York (Coppergate) stitch.
  • Oslo stitch.

Go home with a new understanding and appreciation of this ancient technique, and a range of sample pieces.

No prior experience is required — just enthusiasm and curiosity for ancient textiles and traditional making!

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.
