Five Day Stone Setting Course

Day One – Tuesday 6th February 2024.
Cabochon Stone Setting

A cabochon stone has a smooth, round domed top and a flat base.

Learn how to make a setting for a round or oval cabochon stone and complete a silver pendant. Once the basics are mastered, this versatile technique can be applied to create settings for many different shapes and materials.

Day Two – Tuesday 13th February 2024.
Tube Setting and Gypsy Setting

Two techniques in one day.

Tube setting: Learn how to set a round faceted stone in to silver tubing.

Gypsy setting: Learn how to ‘bury’ a small round faceted stone in to thick silver sheet so that the top of the stone is flush with the surface of the metal, a method known as gypsy or ‘flush’ setting.

Day Three – Tuesday 20th February 2024.
Collet Mount Setting

This clever technique explores how to create a paper template and then make an upturned cone shape in silver to hold and contain a round, faceted stone.

Days 4 and 5 – Tuesday 5th March 2024 and Tuesday 12th March 2024.
Channel Setting

Learn how to build a straight bed or ‘channel’ in silver and set square cut, semi-precious stones in to it to make a pendant.

This project usually takes around a day and a half to complete. Students should then have the opportunity to spend the remainder of day five working on any of their course pieces that may need completing.

There is a cost of £75 per student included in the course fee for basic materials.  This will cover the precious metals and semi-precious stones to enable each student to make one sample piece of each stone setting technique demonstrated on the course. The tutor will advise on the costs and suppliers for any further items you wish to make.

Your tutor will also give guidance about how to buy precious metals if you would like to add more silver and gold to your sample pieces.

This is an intermediate course so a minimum of five to ten tutored workshop hours in jewellery making would be preferable.

A picnic lunch and refreshments will be provided on each day of the course. This cost is included in your course fee.
