Upholstery

Join experienced upholsterer Mark Swain from The Little Furniture Shop for a day working on your own project. Mark will be on hand with expert guidance to help you revive your chair, stool or other portable piece of furniture.

There will be tools to borrow and a variety of sundry items like webbing and tacks available to buy for cash on the day, but please bring along your own furniture, stuffing and fabric, and any tools you are already using. By the end of the day you will have moved your project forwards and learned some new upholstery tips and techniques.

You don't need any previous upholstery experience - all levels are welcome. Please note that it may take several sessions to complete more complicated projects and that we will need advance notice of the item that you are bringing. 

A light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Jesmonite Candle Holder

Discover the magic of jesmonite – the eco-friendly, versatile material loved by modern makers – in this hands-on candle holder workshop. In this fun and relaxed session, you'll learn how to mix, pigment, and pour jesmonite to create your own unique candle holders to take home and enjoy. You'll even have the chance to pour your own candle straight into your jesmonite holder.

Perfect for beginners, this workshop is all about experimenting with colour, texture, and form. You can explore techniques like terrazzo chip making, marbling, and layering to produce one-of-a-kind designs. You will take home several completed candle holders of different designs, or as a matching set.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Soils, Composting and Mulching

Good soil is essential for a healthy garden. Spend a day with us learning more about:
 
> Different soil types, identifying your own soil type and how to care for it.
> Improving soils: manures, composts, mulches.
> Mulch: what to use, how to use it and when to apply it.
> Composting: the basics of making your own.
> The no-dig gardening method: a brief look at what it is, how to do it, and its advantages.
 
You will leave with practical general knowledge as well as information about how to manage and improve your own soil at home. 
 
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are provided, however please bring along some soil from your garden to discuss on the day.

Introduction to Decorative Gilding

Join us for a day delving into the elegant craft of decorative gilding. You will learn to handle real gold as well as silver and imitation gold on a variety of surfaces, including leather, paper, stone and shell. You will use loose-leaf and transfer gold, and oil and acrylic sizes to hone your skills in applying the different metals. These skills can be used in restoration as well as artistic and creative projects.
 
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those looking to extend their gilding skills.

A light lunch, refreshments and most materials are included, including an allocation of gold leaf. Additional gold leaf can be purchased on the day to use or take home.

Canal Art Stools

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with basketry experience. Please note that you need a certain amount of hand strength to work with willow.
