Is that old armchair looking sad and saggy or maybe that dining chair needs a simple, freshly covered seat. Bring along a small item of furniture and learn how to upholster using traditional methods.

Depending on what you have chosen to restore, this could include woodwork restoration, webbing, stuffing, springing and covering. Workshops can be taken as individual sessions for simple repairs and restorations or as multiple sessions for larger projects.

Your tutor will have upholstery tools that you can borrow and basic materials for stuffing and springing. You will need to bring along your own upholstery fabric.

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and improvers.

A picnic lunch will be provided.

Needle Felted Teddy Bears

Make a charming old fashioned little teddy bear by using the simple technique of needle felting.
No prior skill required – just work with natural fleece and a special needle and off you go. Add a ribbon bow or tie for a special finish.

These cute little teddies are approximately 15cms tall making them perfect little festive gifts.

Tutor will provide all materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your fee.

Festive Willow Wreath and Trees
NEW DATE ADDED

Spend the morning making a wonderful willow wreath and a small festive tree or two. Learn how to use a traditional or random weave for your tree and decorate as you choose. You will also make a solid willow wreath base that can be decorated with a mixture of living or dried plants and flowers or maybe just a garland of tiny lights. A beautiful addition to your home that can be used at any time of the year.

Scandi Style Decorations

Introduction to Glass Fusing

Create two pieces of gorgeous, fused glass while learning some basic skills, in this creative workshop. Make a curvaceous freestanding ‘wave’ form – perfect placed to catch the light.
Plus, a delightful, rectangular ‘presentation’ plate.

You will be interpreting your own design with advice & guidance for the best result from the tutor.

Note: Your work will be taken back to the tutor’s studio for firing; first to fuse and then to slump (bend) into shape. Your finished pieces will be returned to Westhope for collection in approximately 2 weeks.

Drypoint with Chincolle

Using your own designs as reference, experiment with both drypoint engraving and chincolle collage to create one or more unique and original prints.

Your tutor will begin by discussing your ideas and then helping you to choose a suitable image for your print. Start by engraving your design onto a perspex plate, applying ink and then by adding thin layers of coloured and decorative papers build up the colour and texture of your images before printing on a small etching press.

Students are encouraged to bring along a selection of fine, delicate scraps of paper to experiment with. These can be plain or decorative, old maps, text script etc;

Hanging Glass

Learn how to cut glass, foil and solder in this fun half day workshop. Make an item of your choice such as a glass heart, bumble bee, dragonfly, ladybird or maybe a light catcher or a moon. The possibilities are endless!

Students are encouraged to bring along ideas for potential designs but your tutor will supply ideas if you feel unsure.

Quirky Birds

Do you want to learn about working with glass? Maybe you have coloured glass off cuts that you don't know what to do with. This fun half day workshop will show you how to turn those small pieces of glass into quirky birds using copper foil, solder and copper wire to add details such as legs and tail feathers.

Cyanotype

The Cyanotype process is an early form of photography discovered in the 1840s and then became a popular method of documenting botanical specimens. Images will be created by laying various objects or organic specimens onto a prepared photosensitive base.  The base when exposed to daylight creates detailed negative shapes which in turn develops into a beautiful Cyan blue colour. Learn how to mix and prepare solutions, and create your Cyanotypes.

This will be an experimental workshop where you will produce several unique images using this light sensitive process. Students are encouraged to bring along a selection of objects to use for printing; feathers, lace, plants, any pressed samples, wire, string, stencils etc. You have the option to decorate a tote bag if you wish.

Tutor will provide materials for this workshop. This cost is included in your course fee. The cost of the tote bag is extra and payable to your tutor on the day.

Mixed Media

Using a range of media, including watercolour and inks, pastels and resists, create vibrant and exciting images based on a still life or other subjects. Demonstrations and help from the tutor mean everyone can succeed with these techniques.

Arched Stained Glass Panel

Design and make a beautiful arched topped stained glass panel using coloured glass, lead cames, solder and leaded light cement. Learn all the skills required to make a unique panel and take it home with you at the end of this two day course. Students are encouraged to bring along ideas for their own panel design but your tutor can provide these for those students who are unsure.

*Some glass experience is preferred for this workshop.

Still Life in Batik

A vase of flowers or a few favourite objects, these will be the inspiration to create batiks on tissue using Jenny’s contemporary interpretation of a traditional technique. Working with hot wax, bleach and inks, tissue and other papers to make individual pieces of work. No experience is necessary as the technique will be taught from scratch
