An Introduction To Silversmithing – 5 Day Course
Learn traditional and contemporary silversmithing techniques on this five day course. It is a rare opportunity to practise a range of techniques and study the cross-overs between jewellery and three dimensional form in metal with the option of creating a finished piece or pieces.
Day one: Puzzle Inlay.
Cut and shape two separate pieces of sheet metal so that they fit together like puzzle pieces and blend as if one. Optional outcome; a sample of inlay.
Day two: Press Forming.
Use doming punches, vices, hammers and formers to learn how to make dish and bowl shapes in sheet metal. Optional outcome; a spoon or bowl.
Days three and four: Soldering Tips and Practise.
A great introduction to the art of soldering, also an opportunity for intermediate makers to troubleshoot any challenges with this versatile technique. Optional outcome; a round, oval or square box with a lid.
Day five: Scoring and Mitreing.
Score, file and bend sheet metal to create a variety of shapes and forms. Optional outcomes; a square or rectangular picture frame, a conical ring keep.
There is a cost of £50 per student included in the course fee for basic materials. This will cover wire, tubing and sheet in a selection of base metals such as copper, brass and gilding metal.
Your tutor will also give guidance about how to buy precious metals if students would like to add silver and gold to their pieces.
This course is suitable for both beginners and for those students who wish to develop their jewellery making skills.
A picnic lunch will be provided on each day of the course.
