Chinese Brush Painting - Bees and Peony
Chinese brush painting is about opening the mind to a completely new way
of creating imagery. Unlike in western art, simple birds, flowers,
leaves and insects are created by the stroke of a brush.
During this workshop we will look at the beautiful peony with a cluster
of flying bees. The peony is a symbol of male and female beauty. It is
also regarded as the Queen of Flowers. Sitting in the landscape the
sense of space is achieved by delicate mountains and distant tea houses.
Less is more and the empty spaces we will leave alone to open our minds
for meditation and mindfulness.
This workshop is open to everyone, from complete beginners to those
looking to improve their skills.
All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the
workshop fee.

Chinese Brush Painting - Traditional Landscapes and Figures
Shanshui hua (San swei) is the name for traditional Chinese landscape
painting, 'Shan' meaning mountain, 'Shui' meaning river. The style is
quite different from Western landscape art. It is a reflection of
Chinese religion and culture. It tells a story which shows the outer
appearance as well as the inner spirit.
Today we will look at the basic
brush strokes that are the foundation of Chinese landscape painting. We
will include figures that are traditional and necessary to show scale.
Figures are often found in contemplation and meditating on the majesty
of their surroundings.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who
are continuing on their Chinese Brush Painting journey. Part two will
follow this workshop on May 14th. We will apply the techniques to the
Shropshire landscape.
All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the
workshop fee.

Chinese Brush Painting - The Shropshire Hills
Following on from the workshop on Chinese landscape painting on April
23rd, we now take the traditional Chinese painting methods and apply
them to the beautiful County of Shropshire.
The style is quite different
from Western landscape art. It is a reflection of Chinese religion and
culture. It tells a story which shows the outer appearance as well as
the inner spirit. Today we will look at the basic brush strokes that are
the foundation of Chinese landscape painting.
We will look at photographs taken by me and some from social media,
although photos or drawings brought in by you would be the preferred
inspiration for the day.
This workshop is suitable for artists of all levels. It is not necessary
to have completed part one although it helps. Any experience you bring
to the day is valuable.

Making Earth Pigments
Learn how to grind, sieve and muller raw ochre pigment to make
watercolour paints and etching inks for printmaking in this one-day
workshop.
Ochre is a naturally occurring pigment found in earth rich in ferric
oxide. The Forest of Dean is one of these places and artist / printmaker
Nichola Goff has been collecting and using these pigments in her work.
Earth pigments produce beautifully rich tones ranging through yellow,
orange, red, purple and umber, they are relatively simple to process and
often used for paints and dyes.
In this workshop you will learn about processing earth pigments from a
raw material into a fine powdered pigment that can then be used for inks
and paints. Participants will learn the techniques and recipes to
produce water colour paints and etching ink, and learn monoprint
techniques to experiment with the earth pigments as printing inks.
Participants will take home a small set of earth colour watercolour
paints, a tube of unique earth pigment etching ink made on the day and a
set of hand-made monoprints.
Suitable for all skill levels from beginners to experienced printmakers.
All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the
workshop fee.
